The much anticipated Harry Potter role-playing game is still on course for this year, despite fears of another delay.
Thursday night’s new State of Play event didn’t reveal a specific release date for Hogwarts Legacy but instead said the game was due ‘holiday 2022’, which likely means November or December.
The lack of a confirmed release date is likely because publisher Warner Bros. are uncertain of when exactly the game will be finished, but equally they’ll want to know when other big name games are out during that period, so they can avoid releasing at the same time. Currently the only confirmed game in that period is Xbox console exclusive Starfield.
Hogwarts Legacy was first announced in late 2020 and is described as a ’single-player open world action role-playing game’. Apart from a brief reveal video, though, it has barely been seen or mentioned in public until now. So it’s a good job it looked really good.
The game is set in the late 19th century, presumably to ensure it doesn’t get in the way of any continuity from the books or the Fantastic Beats movies, and allows you to create your own custom character at Hogwarts.
According to the developers, writing on the PlayStation Blog, the combat will have ‘depth and challenge’, while other elements will emphasise puzzle solving, exploration, and dialogue.
Apart from the problems brought on by the pandemic, the game has been plagued by issues since its announcement – not just the controversy surrounding J. K. Rowling’s many transphobic comments but the exit of lead developer Troy Leavitt, who ran an anti-social justice YouTube channel.
