New gameplay footage for Hogwarts Legacy revealed during the March PlayStation State of Play shows the main character using numerous spells. However, the summoning spell Accio appears to be used incorrectly compared to rules set in previous books and films. While many aspects of the Harry Potter universe have been altered to fit both video game and film adaptions, the changes made to spell casting in Hogwarts Legacy appear to directly contradict or ignore important rules outlined previously. These changes may have fans of the series wondering what technically counts as canon, and how many large changes will be made in the upcoming game.
The summoning spell Accio was introduced to the Harry Potter series as a way to summon inanimate objects to the castor. Harry is required to master the summoning spell during his fourth year when he must summon his broom from a large distance during a challenge in the Tri-Wizard Tournament. To use the spell, the castor must first say "Accio", followed by the name of the object being summoned. They must also be able to mentally visualize the object clearly, to ensure the spell works correctly.

In the footage shown on the PlayStation YouTube channel, the main character is seen using the summoning spell to pull handles, activate switches, and even tug living beings within range of attacks during combat. If the spell were functioning as demonstrated in the Harry Potter books and films, using the summoning spell on a lever would require the castor to specifically call out the object, and could likely yank it completely from the wall or platform to then zoom into the main character's hand.
