Stars Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew are set to return to Grey's Anatomy in the upcoming season 18 finale. The series, which was created by Shonda Rhimes for ABC in 2005, is the longest-running scripted primetime show on the network. Grey's follows Ellen Pompeo's character Meredith Grey on her journey from intern to chief of general surgery at the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital. The show also features a massive ensemble cast of nurses, doctors, surgeons, and patients and follows their lives, loves, and various interpersonal dramas in and around the hospital. In addition to Meredith, Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) are the only characters to have appeared in the main cast of every season.
However, there are many actors who haven't lasted through the entire series run who remain synonymous with the series. Two of the more prominent of these are Jesse Williams as Jackson Avery and Sarah Drew as April Kepner, who both debuted as recurring characters during season 6 before being upgraded to the main cast in season 7. Avery is a plastic surgeon and Kepner is a trauma specialist, and over the course of their various struggles, they fall in love and eventually get married and have two children, one of whom dies of osteogenesis imperfecta type II. Although the pair got divorced in season 12, when Williams left the show, their characters reunited to run the Harper Avery Foundation in Boston and things were looking promising for a potential rekindling of their romance.
