The latest PlayStation exclusive is already a major hit but it’s not Sony’s biggest game of the year so far.
When you leave almost a decade between numbered sequels it’s never certain what kind of reception you’re going to get and while Gran Turismo 7 has gone straight to the top of the UK charts it’s not broken any records getting there.
Gran Turismo 7 sold 28% less than 2017’s Gran Turismo Sport, but that’s actually a very small drop given the five year gap and means that once digital sales are counted in the game probably saw an increase over its immediate predecessor.
It became the fourth biggest physical launch of the year, behind Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Horizon Forbidden West, and Elden Ring. Although Elden Ring is the biggest overall, once digital sales are taken into account (not that they can be for Switch titles, since Nintendo refuses to release the data).
The PlayStation 5 version claimed 76% of sales, suggesting that the need for Sony to make future games cross-gen may be coming to an end – although this year’s God Of War Ragnarök will still be on both formats.
Elden Ring’s second week sales fell by 69%, which is a very good hold for a big game, especially one with a hardcore audience – not that Elden Ring ended up being restricted to just that demographic.
The second highest new entry of the week is Square Enix’s Switch exclusive Triangle Strategy at number seven. On the face of it that doesn’t seem too bad for a relatively niche title, but it sold less than half that of the four-year-old Octopath Traveler – but around the same as Bravely Default 2.
This week’s biggest launch is WWE 2K22 on Friday, but it’s hard to say whether it will go straight to number one or not. Next week’s next gen version of Grand Theft
