Google Fiber's major speed upgrade has arrived with a 5 Gig service now available in a number of US cities.
Speed upgrades were teased back in September and then Google confirmed both 5 Gig and 8 Gig services would arrive in early 2023 a month later. Now the 5 Gig service is being made available(Opens in a new window) to customers in Kansas City, West Des Moines, and all Utah cities where Google Fiber is available.
In return for $125 per month, Fiber subscribers will get 5Gbps symmetrical upload and download speeds through a Wi-Fi 6 router, although you can choose to use your own router hardware instead. Google also mentioned last year(Opens in a new window) that up to two mesh extenders will be available if required as part of the professional installation.
As an added bonus, the installation required for the 5 Gig service installs a 10 Gig Fiber Jack, meaning any residence adopting the faster service will also be ready when the inevitable 10 Gig option eventually arrives. There's no more news on the $150 per month 8 Gig service other than Google confirming it's "on the horizon."
