Of Ghostbusters: Afterlife'shuge revelations, founding member Dr. Egon Spangler having a daughter was the biggest, but one theory about the scientist may fix the movie’s major plot hole in regard to this story. Portrayed by the late Harold Ramis, Egon’s past before Ghostbusters was mainly a mystery and defined by his academics. However, looking at Ghostbusters: Afterlife and the original movies from a different context, it appears the character may have been more complex than many people thought.
Centered around a family who moves into a farm they inherited, the youngest kid, Phoebe, discovers that their grandfather was famed paranormal investigator Egon Spengler. As the movie progresses and Pheobe’s family learns about the original Ghostbusters’ past in Afterlife, Egon’s ghost, who is still haunting the farmhouse, makes it known he has unfinished business and knowledge of an oncoming apocalypse. Egon was the type who sacrificed everything for his work, causing audiences to question how and when he managed to start a family, especially when Ramis himself was already 40 in Ghostbusters. However, a fan theory pointed out by Shawn Robare (via Twitter) suggests that Egon may have already been a father before the New York cross rift and secretly raised his daughter during that time. The idea of Egon’s secret family adds more depth to the character and fixes a major character plot hole.
