Mega Evolution in Pokémon GO has been a way to pack a powerful punch in battle since 2021; however, the mechanic could benefit from new Mega Evolution-capable Pokémon from Generation 8. Pokémon's Mega Evolution mechanic was originally added to the series in Gen 6, during Pokémon X and Y, and further expanded on in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Since these games, Mega Evolution has appeared in numerous Pokémon titles, but with no new Mega-capable species for players to find and use in battle.
While Mega Evolution offered a powerful additional form of temporary evolution in the main series ofPokémon games, it wasn't so successful when first integrated into Pokémon GO. From its release up until recently, Mega Evolution was locked behind a frustratingly difficult Mega Energy system that prevented the regular use of Mega Evolution in standard gameplay. It also punished players at too low a level to participate successfully in Mega Raid Battles, making it difficult to access both Mega-capable Pokémon with good stats and the needed Mega Energy to use the ability. However, a recent Pokémon GO Mega Evolution update has helped increase accessibility to players, improving its use.

Unfortunately, the Mega-capable Pokémon currently released in Pokémon GO are limited, and due to a lack of Mega Evolution in Pokémon Sword and Shield, do not include popular favorites from the Gen 8 games. However, the recent update and regular debuts of new Pokémon species, forms, and varients in Pokémon GO could make it the perfect platform for introducing new Mega Pokémon from more recent games.
