Ross and Rachel are the most iconic relationship in Friends, with their ‘meant-to-be’ story spanning the whole series, but Ross and Emily’s story was much better. Emily Waltham (Helen Baxendale) was the English niece of Rachel’s (Jennifer Aniston) boss. She met Ross (David Schwimmer) when Rachel begged him to take Emily out to the opera so she could go out with short-lived romantic interest Joshua (Tate Donovan) instead.
Ross and Emily’s relationship started in Friends season 4 and they quickly fell in love. They decided to get married in London where Ross infamously said Rachel’s name at the wedding, which was because David Schwimmer made a real mistake mixing up Rachel and Emily's names. After this error, Emily stays in hiding throughout season 5 but agrees to return to New York and try to fix things with Ross—as long as he doesn’t see Rachel anymore. Ross and Rachel had an on-off relationship up until this point and Rachel was on her way to tell Ross she loved him at the wedding.

Ross and Emily’s relationship was very fast-paced and ended quickly when Emily decided she couldn't trust him. Even so, it was a much better story than Ross and Rachel. The iconic sitcom duo had a very toxic relationship throughout the entirety of the show, and Ross and Rachel almost didn't end up together, whereas Ross and Emily’s relationship was very balanced and loving, even it every stage of it was incredibly rushed. Although Emily turned very jealous after Ross said the wrong name, quite understandably, she was very clear she didn’t trust him at this point, and if he hadn’t said Rachel’s name the marriage would most likely have continued in a positive way.
