Foamstars open beta takes place at the end of September
Square Enix has announced a Foamstars open beta will take place from 30th September through to 2nd October, giving PS5 players a chance to try out this foam-filled riff on Splatoon. The full game will launch in early 2024.
The beta will showcase two different game modes with any PS5 owner able to play for free – no PS+ required.

Foamstars takes the ‘paint the world’ style of multiplayer shooter popularised by Splatoon and puts a foam party nightclub aesthetic on it. You’ll shoot coloured foam to try and cover the world in your shade, as well as squirt foam at enemies to try and knock them out. You’ll also be able to move more quickly by hopping onto a surf board.
While clearly taking inspiration from Nintendo’s game, there are some different ideas within Foamstars. The two game modes in the open beta are Smash The Star, where one player on each team is marked as the Star and the other side tries to take them out. Then there’s Happy Bath Survival, with the team split between an inner arena and an outer area where buddies can fire from afar. There’s also eight distinct characters, each of which have specific abilities.
