Fitbit has announced that it is recalling over a million units of its Ionic smartwatch, citing overheating hazards after multiple reports of severe burn injuries. This is not the first time that Fitbit has had to recall a product over safety concerns, though. In 2014, Fitbit had to issue a recall for over a million units of its Force activity tracker in the U.S. over complaints that its stainless steel casing was causing allergic skin reactions.
Moreover, the materials used in the strap and the adhesive used during assembly caused rashes, reddening and even blistering. The latest victim of sub-par product safety assessment is the Fitbit Ionic smartwatch. The device was sold via Fitbit’s official website and Amazon online, while retail outlets such as Best Buy, Kohl’s, Target, among others, sold it between 2017 and 2021.

Following the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) orders, Fitbit is now recalling about a million units of the Ionic smartwatch sold in the U.S. and will also be extending the courtesy to approximately 693,000 units sold in overseas markets. As per the official recall notice, the lithium-ion battery fitted inside the Fitbit Ionic smartwatch can overheat and pose a burn hazard to users. Customers affected by the recall have been advised to contact Fitbit’s customer service portal to return the device. In addition, Fitbit says affected customers can dial toll-free at 888-925-1764 to get help or visit its official product page (help.fitbit.com/ionic) and head over to the “Product Help” at the bottom for more details on the whole process of recall and refund.
The company will issue a refund worth $299 to compensate
