There was a period in history when Duke Nukem was a celebrated addition to the now-bygone era of PC gaming. The 1996 release has been heralded as one of the greatest FPS games of the 90s, up there with the likes of Half-Life, GoldenEye 007, and even the original Doom. Sadly, those days are long gone, and thanks to the unanimously poor reception of Forever, the series may never come back again. However, the fan-made restoration project is still underway, which aims to bring back what the game was going to be way back when.
In a report from DSO Gaming, a number of teaser trailers have been uploaded for what is being referred to as the «Duke Nukem Forever Restoration Project.» As the name suggests, it will take the disastrous 2011 Duke Nukem release and reinstate the initial vision, specifically from 2001. They show some of the locales that will be featured, as well as some action sequences, and new music by Lee Jackson, who has been doing the music for the series since Duke 3D.

The build of Duke Nukem Forever 2001 was leaked online a few months ago, with much of its assets supposedly in-place, making the game pretty much playable. Of course, because it's a game that was being built more than 20 years ago, it's visually dated. However, that's unlikely to put off too many fans, especially those who have been yearning to jump back into the boots of the cigar-smoking alien killer. It's hard to say whether this will suffer the same fate as the official Forever, but many will likely agree that it couldn't possibly be much worse.
