Mozilla on Tuesday released version 100 of its privacy-focused, open-source Firefox browser, bringing new features across multiple platforms. Developed and marketed by the non-profit Mozilla Foundation, Firefox is available on many different platforms, including Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, and more. It was once the most popular third-party browser on desktops but has since been overtaken by Google Chrome as the world's favorite web browser, despite concerns over privacy and other issues. As of April 2022, Firefox is the fourth-most popular browser on desktops and the eighth-most popular on mobile.
The first version of Firefox was released almost 20 years ago in 2002 under the code name 'Phoenix' as part of a plan by Mozilla community members to create a standalone browser separate from the Mozilla Application Suite. The official version 1.0, however, was launched around eighteen months later in 2004. It soon became immensely popular, with people using it to replace Internet Explorer and Safari in their PCs and Macs, respectively. It is also bundled as the default browser with many Linux distros and underpins other privacy-focused browsers like the TOR browser.

The latest version of Firefox comes with many new features, including an improved Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode with subtitles and captions in the PiP windows. The feature will initially be available on YouTube, Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, as well as sites that support the Web Video Text Tracks (WebVTT) format like coursera.org, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and Twitter.
