Final Fantasy XVI got its time in the spotlight during the PlayStation State of Play presentation. Square Enix showed off the upcoming timed PS5 exclusive in action, showcasing its world and the action-oriented combat. It was also revealed that Final Fantasy XVI will be releasing Summer 2023, exclusively on PS5.
The new Final Fantasy XVI trailer showed off multiple big bosses from the game, as well as the real-time action combat. The combat looks similar to both Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy VII Remake, with high-speed movement and damage number flying around. Some of the boss fights shown had more cinematic camera angles, along with both the main character's health bar and the bosses health bar prominently displayed. The trailer also sets the stage for a massive war between two factions in the game and shows off the more fantasy heavy world.
Final Fantasy XVI is the first mainline entry in the series since 2016's Final Fantasy XV, and it returns to a more traditional fantasy setting we haven't seen in a very long time. It's being handled by the same Square Enix division responsible for the excellent Final Fantasy XIV MMO, and Devil May Cry V designer Ryota Suzuki is working as battle director--so we should expect some very smooth action.
The game will not be coming to PS4, though an early teaser stated it would be coming to PC at some point post-release.
