For all the franchise's adorable mascots and convoluted plots, magical Crystals remain central to Final Fantasy. Their role and overall importance vary from game to game, but they're always present, "shedding their light silently." In many of the early Final Fantasy titles, the Crystals were the most important thing in the universe, capable of saving or destroying the world with help from the heroes.

Square Enix has even made the Crystals a part of the brand's marketing, hyping the main series and a few spinoff titles as part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis continuity - the New Tale Of The Crystal. Let's see how the tale of the Crystals has evolved - new or otherwise.

In the original Final Fantasy title, the Crystals were spheres small enough to be carried in one hand - the English translation referred to them as Orbs. At the start of the game, the Crystals had lost their power to the Four Fiends, causing the world to slowly rot away as its elemental forces were out of alignment.
The protagonists of the game - the four Light Warriors - each bore one of the Crystal Orbs and were tasked with defeating the Fiends to restore the Crystals' power. On the course of their journey, they discovered that the Fiends were simply aspects of a greater evil, the god Chaos. Defeating Chaos ended the threat to the world forever.
The Crystals play a small but vital role in Firion's quest to defeat the Palamecian Empire. Once again four in number, the Crystals are held at the top of the Mysidian Tower. Firion's companion Minwu sacrifices his life to open the way to the Crystal Chamber, allowing the remaining party members to enter.
