Benjamin Grimm, the ever-lovin' blue-eyed Thing of the Fantastic Four, has always had a tormented love life, but his latest romantic interest takes that drama to a whole new level as she reveals she's a cosmic being more powerful than Galactus. In The Thing #5 — by Walter Mosley, Tom Reilly, Jordie Bellaire, and Joe Sabino — Ben finds out that the woman he has been dating is none other than Death herself.
Despite his unconventional appearance, Ben was able to find love early in his career as the Thing with Alicia Masters, the daughter of supervillain Puppet Master. The two dated off and on for a long time before evetually getting married and adopting two alien children. The Thing series is set during one of these past breakups, as Alicia wants to take a break due to Ben's irrational jealousy. The Thing is contacted by a matchmaking service that pairs him with the beautiful choreographer Amaryllis Dejure, who is running away from an obsessed, superpowered fan. The woman, however, is not who she said she was — in fact, she's not even human.

Since the beginning of the series, Ben's actions have been manipulated by forces beyond his grasp. While rescuing Amaryllis, he also met a boy called Bobby Spector. The trio then had to fight the Champion, an Elder of the Universe, and following his trail, they found themselves in the Blue Area of the Moon, the base of the Watcher. There, they meet a team of supervillains led by Doctor Doom, who is hatching an ambitious and potentially apocalyptic plan.
