2018 saw the rocky launch ofFallout 76, Bethesda's attempt at bringing the Fallout universe into a multiplayer setting. The game received a significant amount of criticism from critics and players due to the presence of numerous bugs typical of a Bethesda RPG along with stale gameplay and a notable lack of non-playable characters that normally bring these games to life. Despite the troublesome reception, Bethesda has been hard at work addressing many of these problems through major updates, including the Wastelanders update that finally brought non-playable characters into the game.

The Pitt update for Fallout 76 is a major expansion that implements a new Expeditions system into the game, allowing players to venture into post-war Pittsburgh where Fallout 3's The Pitt DLC took place. Two new missions take players into The Pitt where they'll help the Union fight off a band of Fanatic Raiders seeking to expand their territory. Players must charge up the Vertibird aircraft's battery to launch the expedition into one of the new missions, which feature three randomized objectives along with optional objectives in order to keep replays fresh. Successful runs award up to five legendary items, a Legendary Module, Legendary Scrips, Treasury Notes, loot, and XP.
