Evil season 3 star Aasif Mandvi recalls his worst on-set experience. As the contractor Ben Shakir, Mandvi should have one of the more relaxed roles to play in the Paramount+ series. He’s not the Catholic priest David Acosta (Mike Colter) struggling with his faith. He isn’t Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers), who constantly faces off with the trollish antagonist Leland Townsend (Michael Emerson). Ben, if anything, is often the Devil’s advocate. He turns to science and does his best to patiently and calmly explain what might otherwise seem to be beyond comprehension.
But that hasn’t stopped Ben from getting involved in his share of harrowing experiences. A memorable Evil season 2 episode, in one of the best examples of how unsettling the supernatural drama can be, sees Ben get trapped on an abandoned hotel floor. There’s no reliable cell service, and a potentially malevolent elevator doesn’t work. Throughout the episode’s duration, Ben has to contend with the fact that he may slowly perish with no one even realizing where he went. The character is ultimately rescued by David and Kristen, but not before he has to face his mortality directly. Ben gets into another dangerous fiasco in the Evil season 3 episode “The Demon of Cults”, with Mandvi dropped into a scene that’s right out of Midsommar.
