The 20th-anniversary celebration for the Kingdom Hearts series culminated with the exciting news that Kingdom Hearts 4 is officially in development at Square Enix as well as a couple of new Kingdom Hearts mobile games. Given the relatively recent release of KH3 in 2019, coupled with the fact that the franchise has been slow to release numbered titles in the past — Kingdom Hearts 3 came out over ten years after KH2 — long-time fans of the games were surprised to see an early gameplay trailer alongside the news. Though the KH4 footage is almost guaranteed to change as development continues, it does at least reveal a few hints about where the game's story is headed.

Kingdom Hearts 3, though not the last game in the series, marked the end of what was known as Kingdom Hearts' Xehanort Saga, the storyline that the games had been following since KH1 in 2002. Of course, that doesn't mean that characters from previous entries in the franchise will be entirely discarded.Melody of Memory set up Riku, Kairi, and Aqua's continuing involvement in the game's next storyline, the title of which has now been revealed to be the Lost Master Arc. Undoubtedly, this refers to Sora, who, as of the ending of Kingdom Hearts 3, has been trapped in an entirely new and unfamiliar reality.

Other games revealed as part of the upcoming saga include Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link, a mobile title set for a closed beta test sometime during 2022.
