Everything Everywhere All At Once star Ke Huy Quan says Crazy Rich Asians inspired his return to acting. Originally born in Vietnam, Quan got his start in Hollywood after moving to the U.S. and starting as a child actor in films such as The Goonies. After filming Encino Man in 1992, Quan took a pause from acting for nearly two decades, and instead decided to enroll in USC film school in order to work behind the camera.
Quan told Variety that seeing Crazy Rich Asians is part of what inspired him to break his hiatus from acting and return in front of the camera. Quan notes that he decided to step away from acting because there weren't many opportunities available for Asian actors in Hollywood during his adulthood. However, after seeing Crazy Rich Asians, he realized that he wanted to be on screen with other Asian actors, ultimately leading to him being cast in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Read Quan's full quote below:
When “Crazy Rich Asians” came out and I saw my fellow Asian actors up on the screen, I wanted to be up there with them. I called up an agent friend of mine, and I asked him if he wanted to represent me, and he said yes. Two weeks later, I got a call about this movie that stars Michelle Yeoh, written and directed by the Daniels [Kwan and Scheinert] and Waymond was one of the leads. When I decided to get back to acting, I thought I would get little roles here and there, but never in my wildest imagination did I think that a script like this would be in front of me and provide an opportunity to audition for one of the greatest roles I’d ever read.
