With The Expendables 4 set to release soon, questions naturally arise as to the ranking of the existing three films in The Expendables franchise. Created by Sylvester Stallone, The Expendables was made in an effort to bring together a group of action stars from the 80s and 90s in a collaborative effort that paid homage to the films that helped define their careers. Stallone led the main cast of «The Expendables», a misfit band of mercenaries that take on the most dangerous global missions for a hefty price. Originally conceived as a buddy comedy ensemble, Stallone changed it into a hard-R action series before cameras rolled. Released in 2010, The Expendables was a decent success, pulling in $274 million worldwide from an $80 million budget, making a sequel inevitable.
The Expendables 2 was already planned seven months before The Expendables was released, however, as Stallone was keen on the concept from the start. While multiple stars were approached to join the sequel, including Nicolas Cage and John Travolta, not everyone was interested or able to join, due to timing and overall interest. Still, The Expendables 2 managed to bring in a few new heavy hitters from the old action regime, including Jean-Claude Van Damme as the main villain (named Vilain). The sequel fared far better in terms of critic reviews and made slightly more than the original, taking in a worldwide haul of $314 million from a $100 million budget, prompting the move to get a second sequel underway.
