It's been a while since we've heard from Frontier Developments, makers of space sim game Elite Dangerous. While last year's Odyssey release was fairly disastrous on PC, with bugs and server issues galore, Frontier has been making steady progress improving Elite Dangerous's performance on PC back to acceptable levels. But only on PC. Odyssey's console launch was delayed indefinitely back in July, and since then it's been radio silence.
That silence has been broken today thanks to an update from Frontier studio head David Braben, who said that work on Odyssey has ceased on consoles for the time being.

"Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done,” said Braben.
“Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.”
The console version of Elite Dangerous will continue to receive critical updates, but it won’t be getting Odyssey. At least, not anytime soon. Braben left the door open to the possibility of Odyssey coming to console sometime down the road, but it doesn’t sound like it’ll be this year or even the next.
