Indeed, as Iron Pineapple points out, what players have to do to pause is open the inventory, click help, and then bring up the “Menu explanation” option.
Iron Pineapple shows this works by kiting a bunch of Elden Ring knights and then bringing this up to pause the game. It’s certainly not as simple as just pausing when opening the menu, and in high-pressure moments, it would require some finesse to pause.
