Octokins are stationary enemies that you can find in most stages. If you've ever tried attacking one and been met with an extremely tough enemy, here's why. Octokins come in two variations, which we'll call easy and hard. You can tell which type you're dealing with by paying very close attention to their eyes. Since they face away from the camera, this isn't always easy to do.
In the image above, you can just barely make out the edge of an Octokin's eye, indicating that this is a hard Octokin. If you view the enemy at a similar angle and don't see anything, it's probably safe to assume it's an easy Octokin. Note that you can use the right stick to move the camera around without moving yourself, allowing you to get the right angle to see the Octokin's eyes.
Keep these facts in mind when deciding whether to engage an Octokin to reach the chest behind it, or to leave it alone and make your escape.
