FIFA 23 sales overtook those of the previous series entry within six months, EA announced on Tuesday.
“In the six months since launch, EA Sports FIFA 23 has surpassed life-time sales of EA Sports FIFA 22, becoming the most successful launch in franchise history,” the company said in its fourth quarter earnings report.
“Record live services performance and increased engagement, particularly from our EA Sports FIFA franchise, drove better-than-expected Q4 net bookings, capping a strong finish to the fiscal year,” said chief financial officer Chris Suh.
FIFA 23 released in September 2022 and enjoyed a record-breaking launch for the franchise in terms of first week player numbers, according to EA.
And in January, the publisher claimed FIFA 23 was “pacing to be the biggest title in franchise history”.
“Year to date net bookings from the FIFA franchise have grown 4%”, CEO Andrew Wilson said during the company’s third quarter earnings call. “In North America alone, unit sales are up 50% year over year.”
EA’s fourth quarter earnings call is scheduled to take place on Tuesday at 2pm PT / 5pm ET / 10pm BST.
VGC’s FIFA 23 review said: “EA improves on its predecessor for the umpteenth time, once again delivering the best football game around.
“The new power shots, the revamped set piece system and women’s club teams are welcome, but anyone expecting big changes will want to hope EA Sports FC 24 delivers.”
Earlier today, EA announced that FIFA 23 will be made available to EA Play and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers next week.
Having parted ways with FIFA, EA is preparing to kick off “a new era” of football games with its EA Sports FC series.
