The first EA published Lord Of The Rings game in over 10 years is in development, but it sounds like every other free-to-play mobile title.
While Warner Bros. has been the main publisher behind the last several years’ worth of Lord Of The Rings games (such as Middle-Earth: Shadow Of Mordor and its sequel), there was a period of time when that job belonged to EA.
There hasn’t been an EA published Lord Of The Rings game since 2009’s Lord Of The Ring’s Conquest and now the company has obtained the license to make a brand new one.
Titled The Lord Of The Rings: Heroes Of Middle-Earth, EA has only described it as a ‘collectible role-playing game’ and ‘strategic, social-competitive experience,’ with turn-based combat.
It’s safe to assume that it’s being made with multiplayer in mind and will follow the industry trend of being free-to-play. Given the use of the word ‘collectible,’ there will likely be gacha elements as well, in order to obtain new characters.
The game will feature numerous characters across not just The Lord Of The Rings but also the prequel story The Hobbit. From the sound of it, the game will be influenced more by the original books than the movies, as EA says it will be ‘inspired by storylines, locations, characters, and lore from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit literary works.’
There’s no gameplay footage or screenshots, but a beta version is expected to launch later this summer.
As for the developer, that is Capital Games, the same studio behind fellow mobile role-playing game, Star Wars: Galaxy Of Heroes. That game revolves around collecting characters for turn-based battles as well, so The Lord Of The Rings game will no doubt play very similarly.
