Demons have appeared in most books and games as part of the Dragon Age series. According to the codex on demonic possession, they have been categorized by humans in a hierarchy since the Towers Age. Much is still unknown about demons, but the series has shown that they are spirits whose purpose has been corrupted in some way.
In all, there are nine categories of demons in Dragon Age. However, there are also demons that have been encountered which do not fit in any category. These demons are often called other things if they possess someone, such as an Abomination, Ash Wraith, and Arcane Horror. The categories are listed by power, with the top being Pride and the bottom being Despair.
Dragon Age: Who is the Dread Wolf?
Dragon Age's Pride Demons are known as the most powerful corrupted spirits of faith and wisdom. If they possess someone, they usually become an Arcane Horror or Revenant. They are not only powerful, but also clever, with a love of cruel irony and manipulative enough to seduce minds like a Desire Demon. Out of all the demons, they are known to be the most human-like, which is another trait that makes them the most dangerous.
The second most-powerful demons are Desire Demons. Their most dangerous quality is intelligence, as they use whatever their victims desire most to their advantage and cast illusions to appear as someone else. Most victims do not even know they are interacting with a Desire Demon. If subtle tactics don't work, Desire Demons can also mind control people, and if defeated, they also are intelligent enough to bargain for freedom (though these deals are typically better for the demon than the victim). According to Solas, spirits of purpose are the sort that can be corrupted into Desire Demons.
