A Donkey Kong fan just imagined a hypothetical sequel in the style of Sonic Frontiers' recent gameplay videos. The next installment of SEGA’s long-running, speed-based platforming franchise is rumored to be launching this fall, and the developers have already begun unveiling Sonic Frontiers' new open-world exploration and high-speed combat, which Sonic Team producer Takashi Iizuka promises will be a reinvention of the aging Sonic formula.
However, when the first full look at Sonic Frontiers’ free-roaming open world was unveiled last week, longtime fans of the Blue Blur were less than impressed due to how empty and lifeless it looked. While Sonic’s classic running, jumping, and rail grinding were all present and accounted for during this Sonic Frontiers gameplay trailer, there weren’t any enemies or NPCs in sight — leaving the whole experience feeling rather boring. Worse yet, some players have noted that Sonic’s movement in Sonic Frontiers seems stiffer and slower than usual, which isn’t a good sign for a franchise centered around blasting through colorful levels at superhuman speed. Another, more action-packed Sonic Frontiers trailer would highlight the game’s new combat options, but the Sonic The Hedgehog fan base is still wary that this new title will prove to be yet another disappointing 3D outing for the long-troubled icon of the Sega Genesis era.
