Set photos from filming on the Doctor Who 60th anniversary special reveal David Tennant in costume as the 10th Doctor. While audiences are awaiting the premiere of the farewell episode for Jodie Whittaker, the current and 13th Doctor, work is already underway on future Doctor Who projects. Ncuti Gatwa has been cast as the 14th Doctor, and he will take over the role beginning with Doctor Who season 14. During that run, however, Doctor Who will also hit their 60th anniversary in 2023, and as has been tradition with previous anniversaries, a special program in being filmed to commemorate the milestone.
Little is known about the Doctor Who 60th anniversary special beyond it starring a brand-new Doctor with Gatwa's 14, but only yesterday, the BBC made a big announcement—David Tennant and Catherine Tate are returning for the special. While it wasn't made clear at the time, it's been assumed Tennant and Tate are reprising their roles as the 10th Doctor and his companion, Donna Noble. Statements from incoming and returning showrunner, Russell T. Davies, certainly hinted at that being the case, but his comments were also purposefully vague. After all, Doctor Who is a show that can travel anywhere in space and time, so there's no guarantee Tennant and Tate would return as their original characters, or if they did, be playing the same versions of those characters who audiences are familiar with. Now, however, new set photos from the filming of the Doctor Who 60th anniversary special may shed some light on how Tennant and Tate will return.
