Doctor Who's latest companion romance — between Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor and Mandip Gill's Yaz — is actually getting worse. For decades, the BBC famously insisted there should be no "hanky-panky" in the TARDIS. All that changed after Russell T. Davies' 2005 relaunch, with writers happily telling stories in which the Doctor fell in love, including David Tennant's Tenth Doctor with Billie Piper's Rose Tyler.
Doctor Who's latest Doctor-companion romance seems to be integral to the end of Jodie Whittaker's story as the Thirteenth Doctor. Unfortunately, the potential relationship between the Doctor and Yaz hasn't been handled particularly well; it was unplanned until writing for season 13 began, meaning for many viewers it feels forced and unearned. Making matters worse, the Doctor's treatment of Yaz in Doctor Who season 13 was practically abusive on occasion, with the show even trying to draw a parallel between the Doctor's relationship with her companions and her own experiences at the hands of her adopted mother, Tecteun.

Unfortunately, the Doctor Who Spring Special's handling of their romance hasn't helped. «Legend of the Sea Devils» saw several awkward moments between the Doctor and Yaz as they skirted the issue, but they finally addressed it at the end. The scene was tremendously well-acted, with both Whittaker and Gill showing just how good they are at playing their parts, and the current era would have been wise to make their near-relationship its center all along.
