While Doctor Strange and Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch, are two of Marvel's most powerful practitioners of magic, the two tend to wield the mystic arts quite differently. While Doctor Strange's spells generally draw on magical patrons and create specific and limited effects, Scarlet Witch instead projects energy that influences the world around her in a near-endless variety of ways. There have been many hinted explanations for this in Marvel lore, but the world's magical rulebook remains frustratingly inconsistent. Thankfully, a recent comic draws an explicit line between the types of magic that tend to characterize each hero.
Despite being contemporaries, Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch have clashed many times. Prior to the reality-bending events of House of M, Doctor Strange tried to help Wanda get her powers under control, but he was unable to prevent her Chaos Magic from running wild. In contrast, Strange's own magic is characterized by careful control, and he was declared Sorcerer Supreme only after proving himself to the Vishanti — a trio of mystical deities who lend him their power in his efforts to protect Earth.
