Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 4, Episode 11 — «Rosetta»
When the USS Discovery makes First Contact with Species 10C, Star Trek: Discovery hints that Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) plans to rely on Star Trek's original message instead of action and violence. Now that the Discovery has crossed the Galactic Barrier, the starship and its crew are all alone in an unknown galaxy. Meanwhile, Species 10C, who created the Dark Matter Anomaly, live within an impenetrable hyperfield, and the Discovery has no clue how to get in to make First Contact. However, if and when they do meet the powerful aliens, Discovery thankfully doesn't intend to do so blasting phasers and quantum torpedoes.
Star Trek: Discovery rewrote the book on Star Trek TV shows by emulating J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies and serialized Peak TV shows. WhileDiscovery does include moral quandaries and examinations into Star Trek's core values, Michael Burnham's show is a breakneck, action-packed sci-fi series that often relies on Burnham and her Starfleet friends resorting to violence to achieve their goals. The finales of Star Trek: Discovery seasons 2 and 3 were eye-popping spectacles featuring dynamic space battles and Burnham risking her life fighting the Big Bads of each season. As Star Trek: Discovery heads into its season 4 finale, however, the series has established Species 10C as an opposing force too powerful for Starfleet to match. Captain Burnham, United Federation of Planets President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal), and the other characters have argued that diplomacy is the best course of action.
