Derry Girls writer Lisa McGee has the perfect reaction to a subtle reference in the latest episode of The Simpsons. After a three year wait, a surprise trailer recently confirmed the Derry Girls season 3would return for in 2022. The show, which follows a group of friends navigating their teenage years amid the Troubles, garnered worldwide acclaim thanks to its biting dark humor and raw honesty of growing up in '90s Northern Ireland.
Although The Simpsons is now in its 33rd season, the show still finds plenty of inspiration to draw on — and references to make. In “You Won’t Believe What This Episode is About – Act Three Will Shock You!” (season 33, episode 14) the Simpsons become a victim of cancel culture after Homer is filmed accidentally locking Santa's Little Helper in a hot car. During the scene, eagle-eyed viewers noticed the name of a shop in the background was strangely close to the Derry Girls, before taking to Twitter to highlight the similarities.

And, much to the delight of McGee, thereference has now been confirmed by The Simpsons producer Matt Selman. In response to fans asking on Twitter if the shop in the scene, called Dairy Girls Ice Cream, was indeed a celebration of Derry Girls or something else,Matt Selman responded with "Derry Girls". McGee replied simply with "I. Am. Dead" before Selman followed up by stating "It's the least we could do!". Check out the tweet below:
