The super-assassin Deathstroke's attempt to kill Superman was easily his most embarrassing moment. Even though Wade Wilson has no need for money Deathstroke is the best assassin for hire. It's a measure of his skill that he's gone up against countless superheroes, and frequently come within an inch of triumph. He's particularly noted for his clashes with Batman.
The feud between Deathstroke and Batman has lasted years. According to Batman #122, they first crossed paths when the Joker hired the assassin to kill Robin, only for Deathstroke to dose Superman with Joker toxin to make him even more lethal. It was the beginning of a tense relationship that's involved a lot of clashes — but it turns out Deathstroke had almost entered Batman's path once before, when he was hired to kill Bruce Wayne.

The story is told in Max Landis and Joelle Jones' Superman: American Alien #3, when it reveals he was hired to assassinate Bruce Wayne on his 21st birthday. Gotham's wealthiest citizens had continued to party in Bruce's honor even though he'd disappeared, and Deathstroke staked out the birthday party. Unfortunately this particular event was crashed by a stranger, who Gotham's richest decided could only be Bruce Wayne. The case of mistaken identity would have ended in the tragic death of an innocent — if not for the fact the stranger was Clark Kent, the man destined to become Supreman. Deathstroke first tried lacing a glass of champagne with poison, but this approach wasn't exactly effective; it essentially left him drunk, staggering to the toilet in bleary confusion.
