Storyboard artist Jay Oliva reveals the origins of Deadpool's hilarious Hugh Jackman joke. Following years in development limbo and an accidental test footage leak, Ryan Reynolds' solo Deadpool film was finally released in 2016. The Fox project became the superhero sleeper hit of the year thanks to its fun approach to storytelling, which was highlighted by countless hilarious meta-jokes and fourth-wall breaks.
Jackman is best known for his almost two-decade stint playing Wolverine in Fox's X-Men franchise. Aside from starring in the ensemble films, he also spearheaded his own set of solo projects, including the critically-panned X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which marked the first appearance of Reynolds' Wade Wilson. Thankfully, Reynolds got a second chance to play the Merc With A Mouth properly through the Deadpool franchise. Given their initial team-up, many were clamoring for Jackman's Wolverine to show up even just for a brief cameo in the first Deadpool. That didn't happen, but Reynolds and his team still found a way to include Jackman in the movie in a moment where Wade wears a picture of Jackman's face over his own.

Given Wade's ability to break the fourth wall, the Jackman joke in Deadpool references the actor and not his Marvel superhero counterpart. In a new social media post from Oliva, he reveals how the hilarious bit was conceptualized. Interestingly, the illustration even uses the same image of Jackman that was featured in the blockbuster.
