After a highly successful series premiere, AMC announces the crime thriller TV series Dark Winds starring Zahn McClarnon is being renewed for season 2. The series is based on the Leaphorn & Chee book series by Tony Hillerman and follows Lt. Joe Leaphorn of the Tribal Police, played by McClarnon, as he is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. It is executive produced by Hollywood icon Robert Redford and Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin. The show's premiere reached 2.2M viewers on AMC for its June 12 launch in Live+3 ratings, which made it the No. 5 cable drama premiere of the current season. It also has a very rare 100% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
PerDeadline, AMC and streaming platform AMC+ have ordered Dark Winds season 2, and announcing the show will return for another six-episode run next year. Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks, was quoted as saying, “We can’t wait to share the rest of this thrill ride of a first season with the fans and follow Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee into a second season on AMC and AMC+ next year.” According to the network, Dark Winds is the No. 1 new series launch in AMC+ history. The series also stars Kiowa Gordon as deputy Jim Chee, along with actors Jessica Matten, Deanna Allison, The Office's Rainn Wilson, and others.
