The daughter of Cyclops and Jean Grey from another reality, Rachel Summers is a popular character among X-Men fans, but she has never lived up to her potential after an explosive breakthrough in the 1980s. Marvel Comics always seemed reluctant to give Rachel the spotlight, and fans often assume this is due to the fact that she was introduced as Jean Grey's replacement, quickly becoming redundant when the original Marvel Girl returned. However, there is a deeper, much more depressing reason behind Marvel's questionable management of Rachel Summers' character.
Rachel Summers, created by comics legends Chris Claremont, John Byrne, and John Romita Jr., was born in the reality shown in the classic «Days of Future Past» storyline, a dystopian world where the X-Men were unable to stop the assassination of anti-mutant Senator Robert Kelly, causing the US to degenerate into a totalitarian state based on «gene purity,» where mutants are confined to concentration camps. In this world, a Phoenix-possessed Jean had a daughter with Scott, meaning that Rachel inherited her mother's telepathic and telekinetic powers as well as her unique connection with the Phoenix Force. Rachel was able to travel back in time to Earth-616 reality, where she joined the X-Men, taking Jean's place while she was believed dead. Rachel also had a memorable run with the Excalibur team, but after that she was more and more relegated to the status of a secondary character.
