Despite news that the next Witcher game will utilize Unreal Engine 5, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077's future DLC will still be powered by the proprietary REDengine. The first Witcher installment ran on the BioWare-created Aurora Engine, which CDPR replaced with REDengine to develop 2011's The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. An updated version of the technology, REDengine 2, fueled the vast open-world environments of The Witcher 3, with a third iteration of the engine coming online for sci-fi RPG Cyberpunk 2077.
The studio's tried and true REDengine seemed a good match for Cyberpunk 2077 at first blush, but ultimately proved problematic in many respects. Notoriously, the title launched with widespread issues in late 2020, with even high-end PCs struggling to consistently provide a solid performance. While many of the performance and graphical hiccups have since been addressed, particularly in Cyberpunk 2077's transformative 1.5 patch, some troubles continue to linger here and there. It makes sense, then, that CDPR would want to try out new technology while building the next chapter in its Witcher saga.
