AEW star CM Punk was busy making headlines at the San Diego Comic Con last weekend, but he still took time out of his busy schedule to chat with Screen Rant about a number of subjects, including the important matter of why he's a face in AEW even though he generally prefers to work as a heel.
The self-proclaimed Best In The World debuted in AEW in August of 2021 to one of the loudest ovations in company history. It marked his first time inside a wrestling ring in seven years, even though the entire time he was gone, fans were chanting his name. On that episode of Friday Night Rampage, Punk said that he wanted a match against Darby Allin at the All Out pay-per-view. The Voice Of The Voiceless won that bout, and so began his slow and steady climb to the top of AEW's mountain. He won the AEW World Championship at the Double Or Nothing pay-per-view in late May of this year but had to step aside to deal with an injured foot—a foot Punk himself recently described as «shattered.»

Punk has spent a lot of time in his wrestling career as a heel, but in an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, he explained to John Orquiola why he's been a face since returning to AEW. Even his infamous and oft-imitated pipebomb promo was delivered from the perspective of a bad guy. It just turns out that what Punk stands for is so relatable that fans can't help but eventually cheer for him.
