Call Of Duty in 2023 is still happening confirms Activision
Activision has denied rumours that there will be no paid-for Call Of Duty next year, although it has hinted at a new free-to-play title.
A recent Bloomberg report suggested that next year’s paid-for Call Of Duty has been delayed beyond 2023 but, surprisingly, Activision has issued a statement saying that’s not true.
‘We have an exciting slate of premium and free-to-play Call of Duty experiences for this year, next year and beyond. Reports of anything otherwise are incorrect. We look forward to sharing more details when the time is right’, says Activision.
That’s all they said, and they refuse to clarify further, but it confirms that there will be a paid-for Call Of Duty at some point in 2023.
However, there’s no confirmation that this will be a traditional Call Of Duty, such as the new Black Ops game that was previously rumoured.
It could be that Activision is planning something smaller scale or experimental, such as when 2K released WWE Battlegrounds to cover for the fact that there was no proper WWE 2K game that year.
By not mentioning the name Warzone the statement will also add fuel to rumours that a second new free-to-play title is being planned, beyond the semi-confirmed Warzone 2.
Although many fans would welcome breaking the yearly release cycle, in order to improve the quality of games, the statement has likely been made to reassure investors, as the Microsoft acquisition will take some time to go through (assuming it isn’t blocked, which is unlikely) and in the meantime Activision has to keep everything business as usual.
Whether the Bloomberg report was completely inaccurate or not remains to be seen, but it’s unlikely any official announcement will be made of 2023 titles until at least this time next year.
