The next two Call Of Duty games, plus Warzone 2, will remain multiformat but after that things get ‘hazier’ claims a new report.
There are many, many questions waiting to be answered about Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard but one of the most urgent is what’s going to happen to Call Of Duty, since logically you’d assume they’d try to make it an Xbox and PC exclusive.
There are a number of reasons this probably won’t happen in the short term – most notably that it could attract the ire of a monopolies investigation by the US government – but a new Bloomberg report suggests that the franchise’s multiformat status could end by 2024.
That is to say that only Call Of Duty 2022 and 2023 are currently planned to be multiformat, as well as the rumoured Warzone 2 – whose release date is unknown.
Call Of Duty 2022 is rumoured to be Modern Warfare 2 and 2023 is believed to be a new Black Ops, following leaks which many suspect were orchestrated by Activision themselves, following concern at the lack of interest in Vanguard’s Second World War setting.
Warzone 2 has never been confirmed by Activision, but reliable leaker Tom Henderson describes it as an Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 (and PC) only title that is a completely new game with all-new weapons and maps.
It was always assumed that Warzone would remain multiformat, no matter what Microsoft does with the paid-for titles, but there have also been suggestions that the series may no longer release yearly sequels.
Instead, author Jason Schreier describes the future after 2023 as ‘hazier’, implying that at that point Sony’s current marketing deal with Activision will have ended and Microsoft will be under no obligation to release further games on PlayStation.
