For some bizarre reason, this year’s Commonwealth Esports Championships will include Konami’s maligned eFootball 2022 rather than FIFA 22.
This year’s Commonwealth Games marks the first time video games will be included as part of the Commonweath Esports Championships pilot scheme. Dota 2 has, unsurprisingly, already been confirmed for the event, and now the other two have been announced.
Rocket League was another safe pick, but it’s the third one that’s raising eyebrows. For whatever reason, the Global Esports Federation and Commonwealth Games Federation have selected Konami’s eFootball 2022 as their football game of the event instead of FIFA 22.
Aside from the FIFA series being more of a household name than eFootball (especially since Konami has dropped the Pro Evolution Soccer moniker), eFootball 2022 is an objectively worse game.
While FIFA 22 was not without criticism, eFootball 2022 was immediately lambasted upon its release last October and became the laughing stock of the Internet.
Aside from a complete lack of any meaningful content, it simply didn’t work and was riddled with too many bugs to count, resulting in several hilarious/horrifying character models and animations.
The only real positive was that you didn’t have to pay for it, as Konami intended for it to be a free-to-play experience that it could update with additional content over time.
Konami swore it wouldaddress the complaints and has since released a few minor updates to fix some of the game’s issues. However, its first proper content update was delayed past November into spring 2022 and there’s still no word on an exact release date for it.
