The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is a tremendously immersive one, and the Harry Potter/Fantastic Beasts timeline is a masterpiece of storytelling. Its most recent installment, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, takes place in 1937 in the events leading up to World War 2. Here's the timeline explained. JK Rowling is, without a doubt, a gifted writer. Over more than two decades, she carefully built an entire world around her central character, with a rich and detailed history. There have been Harry Potter books, movies, plays, and more, while Rowling's official Harry Potter resource website, Pottermore, has vastly deepened the Wizarding World timeline. The introduction of these two different, yet connected, worlds leaves a lot of questions about the timeline of the two.
The introduction to the Wizarding World began with the Harry Potter series, and then moved back into the timeline of the Fantastic Beasts series. This basically answers the question: Is Fantastic Beasts before or after Harry Potter? While the Harry Potter movies technically came out first, the Fantastic Beasts timeline is actually set about 70 years prior, with the Secrets of Dumbledore set in the 1930s. Despite the look of the HP movies, the series itself actually begins in the early 90s.
