Comic prequel Blade Runner Origins is preparing to redefine the entire franchise, with huge implications for what fans think they know from the movies. In 1982, director Ridley Scott released Blade Runner, a sci-fi noir yarn starring Harrison Ford that became a visually stunning and philosophically compelling watermark for science fiction cinema. While based in Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, the film diverged significantly from the source material and became a different machine altogether. Though not successful initially at the box office, the film eventually became a cult classic that has since spawned a franchise across books, video games, TV series, and comics.
In the Blade Runner universe, mankind has successfully created artificial people known as «replicants» that serve effectively as a slave race for humanity. Replicants often rebel from their lives of servitude, requiring law enforcement to deploy police officers specifically train to kill replicants. These are the titular «blade runners.» A Blade Runner 2099 TV series following Blade Runner 2049, is currently in the works at Amazon with Ridley Scott producing, even as Adult Swim is airing the CGI anime series Blade Runner: Black Lotus. Titan Comics is likewise publishing three Blade Runner comics: Blade Runner 2019, Blade Runner 2029, and Blade Runner Origins. Each of these series is looking to shade in a little more of the universe for the audience, but it turns out the latter series has even more impressive ambitions.
