Voice actor John DiMaggio has been retweeting a series of angry fans and industry insiders who vehemently disagree with his exclusion from the reboot of Futurama. The cartoon series was originally created by The Simpsons' Matt Groening in 1999, following the adventures of Philip J. Fry, a man who spends 1,000 years cryogenically frozen until he is thawed out in the 31st century, where he begins work as a delivery man. The main cast includes Billy West as Fry, Katey Sagal as Leela, and veteran voice actor John DiMaggio as the robot Bender.
Futurama has had a rather difficult time consistently staying on the air. It was originally canceled by Fox in 2003 after four seasons, but after the success of reruns on Comedy Central, that network created a series of direct-to-video films beginning in 2007 that were then split up into a fifth season and followed by two additional seasons, which aired through 2013. Yesterday, Hulu made headlines when they announced that they would be rebooting the series for season 8. West and Sagal are signed on to return, but the streaming platform is looking for a new voice actor to play Bender, having failed to reach an agreement with John DiMaggio. Despite interest on both sides, the actor didn't feel like he was being offered a competitive rate and the negotiations reached a standstill.
