Beauty and the Beast will be getting a live musical special at ABC in time for the holiday season. The classic Disney animated film, which was co-directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, made history when it debuted in 1991. In addition to an impressive haul of $331 million at the worldwide box office, Beauty and The Beast garnered the distinction of being the first animated movie to receive a nomination for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Now, timed for the 30th anniversary of that game-changing nomination, viewers can look forward to a celebration of the seminal title.
According to TV Insider, The Wonderful World of Disney and ABC will present the two-hour animated and live-action blended special Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration. Set to premiere on Thursday, December 15, the event will be directed by Hamish Hamilton and executive produced byIn the Heights director John M. Chu. Although the cast will be announced at a later date, it is known that the special will pay tribute to the original film and its legacy by highlighting the movie alongside new musical performances. The special will also be available to stream on Disney+ as of December 16.

Hamilton, who previously helmed ABC’s The Little Mermaid Live in addition to quarantine-era singalongs for Disney, will oversee an event that will also include new sets and costumes inspired by Beauty and the Beast.
