Battlefield 2042 has gradually been working to turn things around from its critically-panned launch last year. Measures taken have ranged from adding new content and fixing bugs to reworking aspects of the game that were poorly received upon arrival. In its latest update, developer DICE has laid out several of the biggest changes and new content that players that have stuck with the game can look forward to by year’s end.
Perhaps the biggest of these changes is the one being made to 2042’s Specialist system. Acknowledging that replacing the series’ class system with individual Specialists has been “polarizing,” DICE announced that it will be bringing classes back and integrating Specialists into the classic roles of Assault, Support, Engineer, and Recon. This will follow changes made to the Specialists’ designs earlier this month, and DICE stated that it will continue to tweak their designs and voicelines to better suit the grittier tone of 2042’s world.

These changes to the Specialists are planned to debut in Season 3 later this year. Before then, though, Season 2 will see another major new gameplay feature introduced in the form of Vault Weapons. These are weapons currently exclusive to Battlefield 2042’s Portal mode that will become available in regular multiplayer through a new unlock feature called Assignments. Vault weapons will be added to the game over time alongside brand-new weapons, with the M16A3 assault rifle and M60E4 LMG from Battlefield 3 being the first.
