Last year, we reported on the Battle of Heroes Kickstarter which artist Frenone had launched, and how it was fully funded within 8 hours of being launched. The World of Warcraft-inspired deck of playing cards is now complete, and backers have begun to receive their copies. The deck is beautiful, with gilded edges and a rose gold holographic foiled card back, and comes in a embossed magnetic book box. The deck contains 57 cards in all. First, there are the classic 54 of a standard card deck: The suites are divided up into an elf-themed suite with the Elves of Spades, a dragon-themed suite with the Dragons of Diamonds, a Horde-themed suite with the Council of Clubs, and an Alliance-themed suite with the Alliance of Hearts. The jokers are Bwonsamdi and Calia Menethil — two characters strongly associated with themes of death. Finally, there are three «gaff» cards — a double-backed card, a card featuring a Vulpera, and a second Ace of Hearts. On her Patreon Discord, Frenone explained a little more about these special cards when explaining about the extra Ace of Hearts — which was a surprise.
Gaff cards are for magicians to use with card tricks. So the alternate Ace card is intended for that purpose, but useless to anyone using the deck for gaming or cartomancy.The guidebook that comes with the deck includes some history behind the deck and details behind Frenone's art style, as well as detailed descriptions of the symbolism of the cards themselves and how they can be used in cartomancy. I even did a reading for myself — and was only mildly distressed when Bwonsamdi showed up.
