LEGO has listed a nearly 2000 piece Back to the Future DeLorean set that has elements from all three films of the movie trilogy with a price tag of $170. Released in 1985, Back to the Future quickly became one of the most iconic of the decade, a film that continues to resonate with new generations. The Robert Zemekis film focuses on Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) as he accidentally gets sent back in time in a souped up DeLorean. There, he meets younger versions of his parents and nearly threatens his own existence. The popular film spawned two sequels, taking McFly to the future to help his son, and back in time to 1885 to save the time-traveling inventor and best friend, Dr. Emmett «Doc» Brown (Christopher Lloyd).
In 2013, LEGO released a smaller and far less expensive version of the Back to the Future time machine through Cuusoo, a platform now known as Lego Ideas where fans can submit their custom build ideas, vote on sets, and then have the winning set produced and sold by the toy company. Although popular, the original fan-designed DeLorean set left fans wanting more due to the vehicle's small size, blocky design, and lack of features. With the release of a new version, LEGO hopes to create a definitive model to satisfy loyal Back to the Future fans who have waited so long.
