Donald Glover and the rest of the writing team for the series Atlanta recall being racially harassed while filming in London. Atlanta is a series created by Glover, which follows the story of two men as they try and make their way in the world through the rap music scene. During the show, the two come up against many different social and economic issues. Atlanta was first released in 2016, and has since seen a great deal of success, including winning five Primetime Emmys.
During the Television Critics Association's virtual winter press conference, Glover, along with his co-writers Stefani Robinson and Stephen Glover (Donald's brother), discussed an incident which happened in London while filming Atlanta season 3. On their first night there the writing team recalls being racially harassed on the street. According to Stephen, it happened while the group were standing outside of a closed bar. A group approached the writers after one of them recognized Donald. After the writers inquired whether the group knew where they could go to get a drink, one man suggested that they could just break into the closed bar as «you guys all carry hammers.» The writers admitted that they were so taken aback that they didn't fully comprehend what the man was insinuating. It seems the man could tell his comment was lost on them, as he reportedly went on to say «you guys are Black, you've gone to jail and you do things like that.»
