Atari is intending to sell ‘GFTs’ to celebrate its 50th anniversary, which cleverly manage to make NFTs even more terrible than before.
Publishers have heard fans loud and clear when it comes to NFTs… and they don’t care: they’re going to keep trying to shill them no matter how many people complain.
Ubisoft were one of the first to announce their plans and even though their reveal video got so many dislikes they had to unlist it they still intend to go ahead, while Konami has already sold some of theirs for absurdly high prices and Square Enix is also keen.
And now Atari wants to sell NFTs as well, as a means of celebrating their 50th anniversary. Even though modern Atari has no real connection to the original incarnation of the company, whose name and assets were sold off in the late 90s.
The idea is that ‘Atari’ will sell giftable NFTs called GFTs, which are basically blind bags where you have no idea what’s inside.
You’ll only find out when they become unwrapped on a set date, but judging by how these things usually work there’ll probably just be some artwork or a short video or audio clip.
There’s no indication of how much they cost yet but Atari are keen that, once they’re available, you should buy more than one of them, to the point where they’ll give you a fifth ‘surprise’ GFT if you buy four or more.
If that doesn’t sound lootbox enough for you the official website has details of your chances of getting a rare or ‘epic’ GFT, namely less than 5% for the rare ones and less than 1% for an epic one.
Many people have tried to explain why NFTs are such a terrible idea, including one of our readers via this recent feature, but as long as there are still people buying them publishers are clearly not going to give up.
